As former (and in some cases, current) independent retailers ourselves, we have a deep respect for retail supervisors and all that they have to endure. How To Motivate Your Employees

Let’s talk about what most managers do a very good job of; characteristics like consistency, respectfulness, integrity, and being straightforward with your communication style all go a long way to create a positive work environment.
Consistency – Nobody likes a boss that is on cloud nine one day of the week, only to see them flustered about a personal issue at least a few times per week. While there is certainly a time and a place to talk about personal issues at work (typically not in front of customers, mind you), you’ll do a good job of setting your entire workforce on edge if they can’t expect you to be mild-mannered and pleasant most every day. Don’t get us wrong, we aren’t saying every good manager is a perfect manager by any means. What we are saying is that it’s no fun to work for an employer that doesn’t have control of their emotions.
Respect – The “Golden Rule” goes something like, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” There’s a reason the rule can be traced back further than history itself — there’s a whole lot of wisdom packed into one, easy-to-remember phrase. Regarding a retail store’s environment in particular, your employees will respect you if you treat them with respect and value your time the way you would expect they treat you. This doesn’t mean you have to be especially strict or, conversely, liberal with your approach — it’s more about being consistent. A good way to lose the respect (and motivation) of your staff is to make sure that you treat them differently than the way that you expect to be treated. Again, it gets back to consistency.
Integrity – You could say that there is an inherent appeal to managing employees, for no other reason than that power and control feel good. Hey, we’re only human. So the first step you can take to make sure that you don’t become drunk on power is to recognize that you are capable of abusing that power in the first place. Plus, when people get overly eager to impress or please you, it becomes all too simple to take advantage of this newfound opportunity. Eventually, however, it will catch up to you. Your staff’s performance will suffer when they start operating to please you alone. The very best managers all know that power itself is a privilege, and as such, is fleeting. Treat your employees how you’d like to be treated!
Communication – The final way in which you can effectively motivate your employees without telling them that they should be more motivated (that’ll never work), is to say what you mean and mean what you say. It might sound a little trite, but in this day and age there is more passive-aggressive behavior than perhaps ever before. Adding to the noise of gossip and duplicity will only get you into trouble when you are a retail employer. If we know one thing, it’s that your employees won’t quickly forget when you said one thing and ended up going back on your word.
